  • Scat, hair, feeding damage, a camera image, or a direct sighting can corroborate the track interpretation.

  • A wildlife or domestic-animal travel route through a yard, attic, crawl space, deck edge, or muddy access point.
  • A likely animal group when several measured prints preserve consistent toe, pad, claw, and gait features.

Other explanations

  • Domestic dog or cat tracks, especially near paths and neighboring properties; compare the full trail rather than assuming wildlife.
  • Bird, reptile, or small-mammal prints that overlap or register differently in the same substrate.
  • Water drops, shoe edges, tool marks, plant impressions, or collapsed substrate that only resemble footprints.

What this evidence cannot prove

  • The exact species from one partial or unmeasured print.
  • How many animals passed, where they live, or whether they entered a building.
  • That the animal is dangerous, diseased, or legally removable.
  • When the track was made without dated monitoring or changing conditions.

Where to check next

  • Photograph a repeated sequence straight down, including a ruler and the direction of travel.
  • Record front and hind print size, toe and claw impressions, stride, trail width, substrate, and weather since the track formed.
  • Inspect the route for scat, hair, digging, feeding damage, entry gaps, or a safe location for a motion camera.
