Key characteristics

  • Workers are hairy bees with golden-brown to dark banding that varies among stocks and individuals.
  • Hind legs of workers have flattened pollen-carrying structures.
  • Color alone does not separate honey bees from wasps, flies, or other bees.

Why it matters

A bee sighting does not predict sting or allergy

Honey bees can sting in defense of themselves or a colony. Individual allergic severity cannot be predicted from bee appearance or a previous mild reaction.

  • A previous or visible sting reaction cannot predict the severity of a future reaction. Trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening systemic symptoms require emergency medical help.
  • Do not swat, handle, block, or disturb a swarm or occupied cavity.
  • Use a beekeeper or qualified professional to distinguish a temporary swarm from an established colony.

  • Observe flight paths and colony context from a safe distance.
  • Confirm honey-bee traits rather than relying on yellow-and-black color.
