Woke up with bites, but I cannot find bed bugs. What should I check?

Question

I checked the top of the mattress and sheets but did not see insects. The bites are on arms and shoulders. I traveled last week and kept luggage near the bed.

Do not rely on bite pattern alone. Inspect mattress seams, the box spring underside, headboard joints, sofa seams, and luggage folds. Evidence such as stains, eggs, shed skins, or live insects matters more than the bites.
